The pre-marital work that I do includes focusing on the research findings of John Gottman, the qualities of a successful marriage that he has identified from the past 25+ years of research at the University of Washington and the Gottman Institute. I also use "Developing Habits for Relationship Success" that is the focus of Brent Atkinson's work, "Relational Recovery Therapy", the work of Terry Real and John Van Epp's "Relationship Attachment Model". All of these models fit very well with the Gottman research.
Mostly it is laying the ground work for what sort of issues a couple might expect in the future and to help them understand the benefit of recognizing these issues early in their relationship. In Pre-marital Therapy I work with teaching skills and understandings needed in creating a mutually successful, intimate relationship. Pre-Marital Therapy also introduces couples to an environment that will be available to them in the future of their marriage if they believe it would be beneficial to expand on their marital skills as they encounter difficult relational situations.
